Lake City wedding cake for Haley & JT at the Lake City Country Club

So enjoyed working with Haley (bride) and Kim (mom) in creating this incredible cake. The reception was held at The Country Club of Lake City and Amy Francis of Francis Event Design was the wedding designer and coordinator. You can see more of Amy's work on her facebook page. A 4 tier fondant serving 255 in a quilted w/sugar pearls and piped scroll design. Adding a satin ribbon, crystal brooch & monogram for that touch of bling. I added the fresh flowers provided by CCs of Lake City to pull it all together. Cake flavors consisted of my vanilla chiffon w/fresh strawberry filling, red velvet with cream cheese and chocolate velvet with chocolate ganache... yum... this photo(s) of my cake are soooo sad in comparison to the remarkable work of Mike Buoy Photography, the wedding photographer.

When Erin and Luke first came to my bakery for a consultation and tasting, Erin pulled out this print out of a page off Paula Deen's website showing a real watermelon wedding cake (as seen in the photo). Erin asked me can you make a cake to look like a real watermelon... Well!? in the words of my fav southern gal, Ms Deen..."I can’t look at food and see what most people see. I want to cut, style, paint, manipulate…do anything to change something ordinary into something extraordinary. " except for me that is the way I feel about cakes and icings... I was very happy with my first watermelon wedding cake... and the beautiful & fresh hydrangeas furnished by Betsy from the Plant Shoppe was the just what the cake needed to complete the look... Devyn brought in a photo of this cake with blue details on fondant and had been told it was only available on fondant until someone said "you go see Ms Debbie"....Yes you can have your buttercream icing and delicate details. Four various princess lace designs wrapped around this 5 tier giant serving almost 300. Delivering the 95 miles was a fingernail bitting experience but with my hubby, Ken driving, we arrived to the beautiful Wardlaw-Smith-Goza Mansion in Madison, FL safe and sound. What a beautiful little town and Victorian homes and mansions everywhere.. Note the wood staircase and both the bridal cake and the groom's had their very own room... The groom's cake was a chocolate velvet w/chocolate ganache and chocolate dipped strawberries and an edible trout on top accented with fishing lures. I had the honor and pure enjoyment this past Sunday to be one of the Judge's for the 1st Florida ICED Cake Decorating Competition held in Ocala...theme was "The Romantic Wedding Cakes"... I do not even pretend to know all the final numbers but there were over 100 registered entries in the various categories and well over 300 attendees. With hands on demonstrations from some of the best sugar artist like Rebecca Sutterby (past winner of the Food Network Food Challenge) the demos were standing room only. Vendors from all over Florida sharing information and selling the latest and greatest of cake decoratoring gadgets.. and free treats were offering to public quest. I made new "sweet" friends and saw other cake pals from my past cake events.. It is hard to imagine this was the first planned by Lisa and Melanie the co-organizers and they only began the planning less than a year ago. I just can not wait to see what next year will bring and hope I have the pleasure of being apart of it in any way possible. The theme for next year will be "The Masquerade Ball"

I created this super large sugar cookie last year for a "Groom's Cookie" He loves sugar cookies and he was a Fighting Irish Fan... so of course it was the only logical thing to do.. this cookie stood over 16" tall and 16" wide... now that is one big cookies. I added an easel effect cookie to the back so it could stand up on it's own. The groom and friends enjoyed the surprise cookie from his bride. Wear Green

Ashley came in with her own computer rendering of a 5 tier cake that she designed and wanted to recreate for your wedding cake. After calculating the sizes and servings her design would serve 3 times for guest than she needed so we started scaling it down. This was our final design.. the top hat is edible and the fresh red roses furnished by Betsy at The Plant Shoppe adding the perfect finishing touches. The fireplace at The Thomas Center creates the perfect backdrop for a wedding cake... and I love the touches on the fireplace mantel. Ashley and Gary's cake choices were vanilla chiffon w/ raspberry, chocolate velvet w/ chocolate ganache and red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese.

Sugar art entries will be judged by highly qualified professional volunteer judges. The winners of novice, advanced, and rofessional divisions will be announced at the conclusion of the event.

In addition to Grand Prize, 1^stPlace, and 2^nd Place awards in each skill division, a People's Choice and a Decorator's Choice will be awarded.

There will be demos from distant and local professionals and raffles for prizes the day of the event..

Giggle Magazine .... what an incredible family magazine... I so love being apart of such a great family.. When they asked me to be apart of their holiday issue and create a Gingerbread House it really hit close to home.. For those closest to me, most know this is how it all started for me. I was a single mom and I wanted to start a new family holiday tradition with my then 5year old son and Gingerbread Houses is what we selected. I honestly went to JC Penny's to take a basic Wilton class to learn how to hold a piping bag and then the magic began. I could not get enough of cake decorating. Gingerbread Houses have been an annual family tradition in my ever expanding family for 25 years...

Rachael's Under the Sea Mermaid Cake with edible sugar sea life

Rachael's mom had seen my Mermaid cake on my website under sugar art and sooo had to have this design for her daughter's 4th birthday. Using many of the molds I have made myself this was a combination of molded items and hand molded items.. In keeping with in the families budget for the cake and not stepping on any copyrighted toes, mom selected to use Arial and friends in purchased tiny toys.. and I think they fit in perfectly with all the other edible decorations. It is so rewarding when a family comes to pick up their cake and someone "squeals" with approval when they see the finished cake.. The under the sea cakes and seashell cakes have a very special connection for me. Few people know I was an avid scuba diver in my younger days, more in the water than out and spent 3 years at FIT an oceanographic technical school mastering in marine science. Leaving school early due to family health issues I never returned but my love for the ocean is as strong as ever. And it is a true labor of love with any beach or sea themed cake... takes me back into the cool blue depths of the ocean.

What an incredible cake....it was created for a Lake City family for their grand daughter's 1st Birthday.. the family was decorating with a champagne dusty rose and pretty pinks...young and sophisicated. The hand made sugar Crown on top surrounded a small buttercream iced cake and was created in such a way that the entire crown and cake could be removed for Adaline's smash cake. If this cake was not incredible all on it's own, it was also Ms Melanie's first pillow cake. Ms Melanie is one of my lead cake decorators and she is up for any challenge, (see more details about Mel on my staff page).

When I met with Jakuana she said, this year I am ordering my own birthday cake, I am tired of those basic copy cat cakes, this cake will scream "Jakuana" so we set out to create her perfect cake. A square buttercream cake with fresh flowers

Thank goodness I did not select photography for a living... my camera was fogging up from the humidity ... this wedding was held at the Haile Plantation Country Club on Saturday July 31 early evening.. One of the warmest wettest days we had. The reception was being held under a big beautiful tent up on the green and the staff at Haile was ready for anything mother nature was going to dish out to them. The florist from The Flower Shop was setting up the floral centerpieces and had buckets of fresh flowers for me to choose from.. I love fresh flowers on a cake and YES... there are safe ways of using fresh flowers on a cake.. This cake was a 4 tier square cake was separated by 2" columns and adding a fresh flowers giving it a floating effect. The rain came down outside the tent and yet everything stayed dry inside.. The tented room was beautiful in the evening greys of a summer rain. The weather cleared up in time for the ceremony and reception

Hat's Off.. a Highway Patrolman's Hate Cake

Denise, the mother of the groom contacted me several months ago from the Lake City area. She wanted to replicate exactly her son's Florida State Trooper Hat.. After many emails and 2 consultations along with the actual hat to be duplicated we were all standing at attention with the final results. Since it was so important to the family to have a perfect cake we elected to use an actual hat cord & hat shield. The black and silver braiding effect of the actual cord was going to be next to impossible to accomplish out of sugar but since we were using the actual cord the finished cake had to be a perfect fit. The first report came in the next morning... SUCCESS!..... the guest all thought he had left his hat sitting on the cake table.. That is what we like to hear..

Love this design. A quilted black fondant with white sugar pearls. Black is so beautiful on a white cake but you never want to use black buttercream, not only a bitter taste but will stain everything and I do mean everything. It is fine for small accents hear and there but not for covering an entire cake.

This little cake had more than one style of twist.....

The family wanted to create a western theme cake for this couple with all the bells & whistles or in this case the boots, hats, horseshoes and ropes. the swags & borders were made sugar ropes and the other western embellishments were also made of sugar. The silk flowers were furnished by the family to add a bright country feel and coordinate with the other room decor. We loved creating this cake with the 1/4 turn effect on the top tier.

This woodlands themed cake was a combination of my grapevine cake and a cake photo the bride had found on the internet. She wanted the mushrooms and acorns along with the colorful wildflowers amongst the vines and topped off with a nest of mushrooms, wildflowers and 2 butterflies. All art was made of sugar including the butterflies. On a latte colored fondant, we so loved creating this new design. Michelle & Aaron's cake flavors were a vanilla chiffon cake with strawberry filling and a lemon chiffon with a white chocolate cream cheese. Their reception was held at Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club.

African Safari Serengeti Lion Birthday Cake

I created this cake for a man celebrating his 40 birthday. It was a surprise cake from his family. He is a hunter and just this past year had been on an African lion hunt and "bagged" his first lion.. a very big achievement. It was a bitter sweet project for me... I am a "tree hugger" and will stop traffic to move turtles off the road (yeah thats me don't hate me).. so it was sad for me but I respect the right of a responsible hunter and I wanted to do my best to create a great cake. I was very very happy with the end result both in the cake and our "sweet" lion topper that Melanie created out of rice krispies and fondant.

The quilted effect is not just for the fondant covered cakes... This is a 3 tier buttercream iced cake that would serve 110 guest and all 3 tiers were quilted and we added a silver dragee to each cross point.... yes that is a lot of dragees.. The cake flavors was our vanilla chiffon with a raspberry filling and also a key lime with white chocolate cream cheese filling. Our semi annual sweet event is finally here... after 18 sheet cakes, 20 fillings, 400 brownie bites, 400 cookies, 1500 pieces of various chocolates I think we are ready.. It is 4AM the day of and I do not think I will see the sheets till at least 11pm tonight, I am sooo excited. I can not thank Villa East enough for allowing us to have this event at this new location, we simply out grew our old venue. I can not wait to see what Unforgettable Events has created for centerpieces and decor. Leah from Celebration's Catering has created another great menu of savories tidbits to help balance out all this sugar... Amy from Adore and her lovely ladies will be greeting our guest and passing out the creative menus created by Giovanni from Unique Design. Enrique & Leigh from Amantez Photography will be taking candid shots and a virtual 360 for me to share with you. Mike from Videotronics will creating one of his incredible videos, I am so excited about this. Eric Redmond on his piano doing what he does best...enchanting us for the evening. Debbe from Florida Dove Company will be displaying her beautiful doves, a dove release at a wedding is an beautiful ceremony. Nothing better than a well dressed man and Tuxedo Junction will be there to answer any questions. Jack Edmonds, a wedding officiant will be on hand sharing the Premier Bride magazine. Remember stopping in the mall taking silly photos of yourself and friends in the photo booths... well do it again tonight at PhoBooth... For the best in wedding reading material The Knot will be giving away a limited amount of these incredible magazines visit their internationally acclaimed website for the latest in wedding news. AP Limo will have a sleek beauty on hand for you to check out... you have got to see the tv in these babies... Jay's Entertainment will also be creating a great sound for our evenings pleasure. Gator Beverage will have samplings of their available wines for you to taste. A lovely bride will be meandering amongst us for the evening modeling a beautiful gown by Solutions Bridal. Not sure who had more fun, the kids or Gail & I.... Ellie, our 7 year old quest of honor is an aspiring young baker and cake decorator. Her mom showed me some of her new baking gadgets that I must go out and get. Ellie and her friends and family had alot of fun adding buttercream and fondant embellishment to their cakes. Learning how to fill pastry bags, pipe a border and work with fondant, each cake turned out as individual as their young decorator. Ellie's request was to learn how to make a sugar rose, so we worked on making ribbon roses. Discussing tips for covering cakes and making their own homemade fondant. at 9pm the night of the party, Elle's mom emailed me some great photos and this note-

"Ms Debbie Thank you again for a wonderful party!! Everyone had a great time and the parents thought that it was the best theme party ever! The parents were surprised that they got to take the cake and accessories home with them. Ellie had a wonderful time. She usually is in bed by 8pm. Tonight she started to go to bed, then remembered the decorations. She got the fondant out of the refrigerator and rolled it out to decorate another cupcake! I attached a few of the photos for you. Thank you again, Dee Ann"

Black linen, with dark red napkins and high and low black iron vases with black magic roses furnished by Thompson's Flower Shop from High Springs.. the room was stunning at Sweetwater Branch Inn... This black Damask cake was the perfect choice along with the cascade of black magic roses. I have been working with Nicole for the last 9 months with little changes on the cake design. The silver cake plateau was furnished by Sweetwater. Her cake flavors were a chocolate velvet with the white chocolate cream cheese filling and a vanilla chiffon with the amaretto cream filling. They selected their cake and filling choices after our last "Say it Sweetly" a night of tasting in October. We have another cake tasting night coming in February, request your evite early.

This was one of my favorite graduations cakes this week... for a few reasons.. I did Amelia & Douglas's wedding cake 2+ years ago, their baby shower cake and birthday cakes... I feel like one of the family now.. It was Amelia's idea to add little UFs around the cake... love it going to be a hit for future cakes. Another interesting fact about this cake, they love my chocolate velvet cake with raspberry filling and the chocolate ganache icing, but for design reasons chocolate icing is not always the easiest to work with. So several cakes ago we tried the chocolate ganache under the fondant rather than a butter cream icing. And except for a little messier during application of the fondant it worked great... so now it is their first choice for cake. Also the top tier was a coconut cake with pineapple filling... ooooh

Sandra wanted a not so traditional buttercream iced cake and needed to serve over 250 quest. This beauty served 300 and this fountain set up is rarely seen. This was the first time I create this cake with the Bible cake in front, typically it has a large 18" 1/2 round in the front. But for this couple the Bible cake along with their selected verse and names was a much better choice. Cake flavors were chocolate velvet w/ chocolate ganache, vanilla chiffon with bavarian cream, vanilla chiffon with strawberry, and red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese.

Edible snowflake for cakes are one of my favorites... the photos just do not show the shimmery, glittery ice like beauty of these cakes.(goes to show why you need a professional photographer). Created for Brenda Morris and David Milan married in Steinhatchee on Saturday Dec 5. Brenda's cake choices were a seasonal red velvet cake with white chocolate cream cheese filling and a spice cake with pineapple cream cheese filling, covered in buttercream and fondant icing. Also spray of sugar snowflakes behind the brides clear ice-like topper was just perfect.

And finishing off her wedding sweets we created white chocolate snowflake bites boxed in a clear truffle box with silver ribbon.

Fall is here even if the temperatures do not show it yet... I love working with the fall colors and for Betty Jo & Michael's cake we made sugar flowers in the golds & oranges of the "circus rose" and the coreopsis and mingled in amongst the sugar flowers were various chess pieces made of dark & white chocolate. YUM... the flowers and the chess pieces cascaded down the side of the buttercream iced cake with a queen & king pair crowing the top. Their cake flavors were vanilla chiffon with raspberry filling and chocolate velvet with chocolate ganache. I enjoyed the table arrangements of various chess boards.

In case I have not mentioned it lately, (HA), our private event, "Say it Sweelty" is finally here.. And it simply gets sweeter and sweeter every time. Angela for A`vie helped me book the elegant Plantation Hall in Haile Village. Angela along with Amy and her other lovely young ladies will be greeting our guest at the door providing them with guidance and menus. They will be happy to answer any wedding & party planner questions that one may have. Susan Minter from Event Divas will be furnishing floral arrangements for our table center pieces and I can not wait to see what she comes up with this time. Many of you will remember Susan-she the feather boa lady... and also thanks to Susan she has arranged with Party Time Rentals for the beautiful linens for the quest tables. Party Time was gracious enough to furnish these linens to us for this event. Ann Marie from Party Time will be on hand to answer any rental questions. I was delighted to have Leah & her high energy group from Celebrations Catering agree to join us for the evening and furnish some of her fabulous savories for the evening. We tend to sugar rush everyone so it is great to have items like "hot spinach artichoke dip", "paid thai noodle salad", "asian ginger meatballs" & "teriyaki chicken stuffed cucumber cups"... my mouth is already watering. Kristen & Paul from Footstone Photography will be taking some great shots for my scrapbook and website and will be happy to answer any of your photography questions & portfolio for you to . "he is the tall cutie pie with the camera". Edward and Adrienne from Duo Cellissimo will be enchanting us for the evening with the elegant and classic sounds of their cellos, what more could you ask for. Oh yes, Tim Dickert from Open Show Video, Tim will be making a short video for me and will have a video of his past work on hand for you to watch. "he will be the one with a video camera and oh-the dreamy eyes".... and not to forget the "behind the scenes group" my sweet family, friends and staff. I do not know what I would do with out my core three... Ken aka "Mr Debbie" -my husband running every errand and delivery I can throw at him, keeping up with me and dealing with my last minute frantics of "OMG-I FORGOT...", and my mom- Ms Rose- who will not be able to be here with us this year but she was able to help make so many of the wonderful chocolate treats... She is my chocolatier (sorta like a mouskateer but different)-"thanks mom-gonna miss ya" and last but SOOO not least, my friend and baker Ms Gail, where does all that energy come from in such a little package... Gail has been with me for hours on end this past week.. I would not do this without her.. and also joining us for the evening, Ms Judy... a great friend and co-decorator-she is the only person I will allow to decorate one of my cakes when I need the extra hands, I wish she was with me all the time, she will be assist in answering cake decorating ???s . Ms Cindy another sweet pal from Happily Ever After Events from Chiefland and Ms Holly a young working mom, both who have agreed to work for "cake" and will be helping us cut and serve cake.. Meredith Dudley & Jacob Farmer at Turkey Creek Country Club Oct 10

I met Meredith for the first time at our "Say it Sweetly" in February, 2009. I did not meet Jacob until apx. a month before the wedding when we finalized all our details for their cake design. Meredith was another bride who had brought in a sketch of a cake she envisioned. I am going to have to start scanning these drawings to include a photo next to the final cake photo, another great idea from the bride herself... KUDOS Meredith.

A 3 tier hexagon cake iced in buttercream with the quilted effect on all 3 tiers (another first), navy ribbon and navy pearls along with a fancy script monogram in a blue on a oval sugar plaque. The 2 jade roses I made of sugar in a greenish-yellow. We delivered the cake to the Turkey Creek Country Club where Chef Peter White from Chef Brothers Catering had a table ready for set up. Meredith and Jacob's cake choices were red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese filling and light vanilla chiffon with white chocolate mousse filling... it was a weekend for red velvet. My photography is not so great sorry for poor photo... need to find her photographer...

So enjoy working with Bren and Garrett. Their theme was "A Perfect Pair" and the room was filled with warm chocolate browns and pear greens which included pears in the center pieces. All the roses, mini pears, vines and leaves were made of sugar and edible. We delivered the cake to the Cedar Key Community Center which has a nice large room and a prep kitchen. Eric Redmond, pianist played for Bren & Garrett at their ceremony. The cakes were a light vanilla chiffon with a raspberry filling and red velvet with white chocolate cream cheese filling, with a buttercream/fondant icing. mmmm yum

Chloe was a delight to work with and when she booked a full year in advance we knew she had plenty of time to design the perfect cake..... well about 3 weeks before her wedding... we were running out of time.. and here she goes... she had designed her own cake.. she sent me a pencil drawing of a cake with a specific look in mind. As many wedding cakes that I have created over the last 18 years, it delights me when a bride selects or in this case designs a cake that I have not created yet.. it was beautiful and it even looked better in front of the mirror at Sweetwater Branch Inn http://www.sweetwaterinn.com. Gainesville Bridal Expo by Jay's Bridal

I so love the Phillip's Center and the Gainesville Bridal Expo on Sept 27 was no exception. The rain kept it's distance and the bride's arrived anxious for a great event. Set up seemed to go so quick and easy, the girls and I actually had time to run and grad a cup of joe. Paul is always so helpful and all the wedding vendors had set up great booths and brides were excited. We look forward to the next one in Jan 2010..

Ladies Night Out

I had the privilege of joining a wonderful group of professional women from Linked in Women, www.linkedinwomen.com. Women business owners set up table top booths to share their services and products from carpet to wine. I brought alone many a sweet pleasures with my infamous brownie bites and my truffles... What a blast we had. Being the first time we all wondered what the night would bring.. well it brought 126 women who visited our tables, enjoyed a wide variety of wine, gifts, massages, candles, flowers, desserts and so much more...Soo looking forward to next year.

Florida Bridal Expo

The Florida Bridal Expo held on Sept 13 at the UF Hilton in Gainesville was sooo much fun. We had a great time creating a fake cake for the mock reception held in the Hilton's courtyard. No one would guess that in a small section in the back of the cake held a sweet treasure for the cutting ceremony.. It was so fun to sit back and watch their faces.. it's a real cake...no not really.. With the assistance of my baker, Ms Gail, my decorator-Ms Judy and of course MR Debbie -my hubby Ken.. set up went smoothly and we spoke with many wonderful brides about their wedding cake plans.
